Artists try new materials and techniques. In modern and contemporary art materials have expanded to include found objects, printmaking, fiber arts, functional art and even waste or trash. Below are images of artist Heather Hansen exploring the expressive use of chalk in her artwork. The goal of this independent project theme is to encourage students to think beyond their comfort zone. The students are encouraged to choose a material they've never before used independently.
Students will attempt one of three printmaking techniques: Intaglio, Relief or Collograph. After they've made a matrix from either foam, EZ Cut Linoleum or chip board they will ink and print an edition of their image. Please follow the PPT linked below to better understand the processes.
Students will follow direct instruction to create a simple stitch sampler exploring 7 different stitches; running stitch, back stitch, chain stitch, split stitch, Herringbone, French Knots, and the Spider Web. Students then have a chance to continue exploring embroidery stitches or they may create a small 12" quilt block.
Stop Motion is the process of creating a video one photo at a time, similar to an animated film or flip book. Stop Motion allows for movie magic to occur; things that normally cannot happen in real life like, inanimate objects coming to life, people levitating, showing the passage of time quickly, or objects disappearing. Students are going to work in groups of 2-4 to create their own stop motion animation short film. Use the playlist of professional films linked below to inspire your artwork and follow TBHS.ART on YouTube to see videos from past years.
The Unit 2 assessment is based on the creation of an artist statement which explains the student's choices and thought process behind their most recent work. Please use the following PPT to guide your writing.
Students create a self-portrait silhouette that is filled with images and words associated with themselves. These students are practicing the use of different lettering styles.
Unit 2 Theme: artists explore personal and cultural identity. Throughout art history artists gain inspiration from who they are as well as other cultures they experience. Students are given many examples of how artists may have explored this theme previously.
Caricatures are drawn images of people that exaggerate that person's unique characteristics. In an ideal caricature the image would almost look more like the person that themselves. Students are challenged to create a caricature of a family member, friend, teacher or famous person
Mandalas originate from a sacred Tibetan Buddhist practice. Traditionally they are created with dyed sand and meant to be an impermanent art. Please review the following PPT for more information on Mandalas and the project students are creating in Art Fundamentals. We will be creating a Mandala on 9x9 paper in pen and/or pencil.
