Through the upcoming project we aim to learn and express a little bit more about ourselves. Although online quizzes can be less than accurate they can still be amusing to take. For your journal today take a school-appropriate online quiz through Buzzfeed and DRAW your response.
What is different about the images? Why does the image on the right look incorrect while the one on the left looks just fine? Our minds have set symbols for nearly everything in our lives. When we flip these things upside down our brains struggle to spot features they're used to seeing. Viewing or creating things upside down can be an effective way to help you notice details you usually take for granted.
Use your phone camera or a mirror to draw a portrait of yourself upside down. Note the parts of your face that are more difficult to draw; why does the change in perspective make you struggle on this portion? Try writing the sentence below UPSIDE DOWN and/or BACKWARDS. Focus on the shapes of the letters and not "writing" as we traditionally think. "The dog chased after his tail until the sun rose in the west."
Typography is the art of lettering. Practice writing your name using 3 different lettering styles. Review lettering styles using DaFont as well as image searches for "illustrated quotes" on a practice paper BEFORE you to begin to drawing inside of your silhouette.
Larry Smith, founder of SMITH Magazine started the six-word challenge. Everyone has a story! Using only 6 words challenges you to boil down what is important or essential to you. Over 400,000 memoirs are now shared on his website including Stephen Colbert ("Well, I thought it was funny") and Taylor Swift ("My diary is read by everyone"). How would you describe your life in exactly six words? When writing your 6 word memoir remember these 6 things:
After you've written 3 possible memoirs choose the one that fits you best and introduce yourself to at least 5 different people in the room. Comparing yourself to a toy, doll or action figure makes you look at yourself in terms of generalizations and unique attributes. Imagine you are a toy or a doll being sold at Toys 'R' Us. What type of toy would you be? What might you want your packaging look like? What might your packaging say? What would set your packaging apart?
Culture is defined as any collective, intellectual human achievement. We often divide culture into many SUB-Categories by characteristics like interests, race, geo-graphic region, etc. What cultural styles, regions or ideas do you associate with yourself? What might be some reasons that defines who you are? We all have unique quirks, whether physical or mental. Try these next two activities to learn a little bit more about yourself:
In your journal write down 3 weird or unique physical or mental quirks that you identify with. For example, all of my fingers are "double jointed"
